Specimen collection
Collect specimens in the tube listed for each test. Invert tubes gently right after collection to mix the additive.
| Tube | Additive | Inversions | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light blue | Sodium citrate | 3–4 | PT/INR, PTT, fibrinogen, D-dimer. Fill completely. |
| Gold (SST) | Clot activator and gel | 5 | Chemistry panels, lipids, thyroid, hormones, vitamins, serology |
| Lavender | EDTA | 8–10 | CBC, hemoglobin A1c, ESR, BNP |
| Gray | Sodium fluoride / potassium oxalate | 8–10 | Glucose |
| Urine cup | None (sterile) | N/A | Urinalysis, urine hCG, microalbumin |
Light blue → Gold (SST) → Lavender → Gray. Following the order prevents additive carryover between tubes.
